ROSES AND THORNS

Varuna is a 14-year old sophomore student in a well-known High School in the city where she is residing recently. Her family just moved from the province 2 years ago. She belongs to a rich and respected family. They have their own business and in fact, they own a Chinese restaurant since her grandfather is a Chinese national. They also own a poultry farm in the province. Aside from being born with a silver spoon, Varuna is also blessed with a beautiful and soft, lovely voice. Yet, she is not contented with what she has and feels insecure with her sister Vanyl who is friendlier, respectful, intelligent, and her parents would get her anything she wants since she excels in class and maintains her high grades. What makes her more upset is that her parents are proud of Vanyl so she would do anything to make her parents proud of her, too.
One day, Varuna went to school as early as she could. She and her friends made a commitment that they would be early everyday. And as funny as it seemed, she liked the idea not because she do not want to be late but because she do not want to hear any praises for Vanyl. It would only make her feel like she is unwanted and that her parents are disappointed of her. She agreed with the commitment because her friends give her the attention her parents could not give. And she does not feel like she is out-of-place. Yet, her friends made her feel she is special.
While they were in the lobby on their way to their classroom, they saw something interesting on the bulletin board.
“Hey, wait a minute,” Olym exclaimed as she stopped to read the notes written. “VOCAL SOLO CONTEST TOMORROW AT THE HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE AT 3:30PM. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN CD,” it reads.
“Oh look Varuna, it’s a singing contest!” Arjalah sounded very excited. “I’ll get you a ticket. You should join it. Your parents would be so proud of you.”
Varuna said as she turned her head high in the air, “Whatever! I will win anyway.”
“Yeah, that is for sure.” Olym agreed.
“It will be boring,” Varuna answered.
Arjalah butted in, “It will not be really boring. Let me rephrase it to not interesting!”
“Whatever!” Varuna said as if she is not interested about the contest. Then she walked ahead of them and waved her silky long black hair as she took her supermodel walk. With her shoulder bag and high-heeled black shoes, she entered her music class confidently.
A minute later after announcing the event, the music teacher handed Moses a ticket and told him to distribute it around. Then he handed Varuna one. She gave him a “duh!” look and said, “I do not need that silly ticket.”
“All those who wanted to join are required to buy one. It just costs 10 pesos anyway! You will not be losing big amount,” Moses defended.
“Whatever! I will win anyway,” Varuna answered as she held her nose high. She took the ticket and paid it immediately.
The next day was the big event. Varuna brought her piano to school and she was ready with her song. She was last in the line so she had to wait for her turn. She conversed with Moses to keep away the boredom.
“Eiw, I do not know what came to Cordianna’s mind that she decided to join this contest,” she commented.
“This contest is open for everybody. I guess there is nothing wrong if she joined,” Moses answered.
“Of course, there is! She is not singing at all. She is just like reciting a poem,” Varuna laughed bitterly. But Moses seemed to be sorry for Cordianna, he did not laugh.
When it was Varuna’s turn, their music teacher announced: “Now, ladies and gentlemen, the last performer is a sophomore student from II-Amethyst, Miss Varuna Sy.”
The crowd gave a thunderous applause and some were even cheering. Varuna smiled and then she started to hit the keys for the first note. The crowd cheered again but soon they kept silent as they listened to the song:
Like a bird that flies in the morning light
Or a butterfly in the spring
When your spirit rides in the wind of hope
You’ll find your wings
As you’re always free to begin again
And you’re always free to believe
When you find that place where your heart belongs
You’ll never leave
(Song copied from Barbie as The Princess and The Pauper)
She sang the song sweetly according to its tune pronouncing each word properly. The crowd went wild and then she got a standing ovation from her friends and teachers. She was congratulated by Moses and Cordianna.
“Wow, you were so great!” Moses admired.
“Thanks,” Varuna said.
Cordianna came in with much excitement, “Congratulations, Varuna. You were really great!”
“Thank you,” Varuna answered as she flashed a fake smile and then raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t you think you should apologize to Cordianna for what you said against her a while ago?” Moses asked her in a low voice making sure Cordianna will not be able to hear it.
“Okay Moses, you will have what you want.” And facing Cordianna, she said, “Cordianna, I am sorry you have a cranky voice. Haha!” She burst into laughter as the other girl’s tears fell.
Then their music teacher walked to the center of the stage. And oh, he is going to announce the winner!
“And now ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! Congratulations, please come forward, Miss Cordianna King!”
The crowd cheered and some even jumped for joy. Varuna could not believe her ears. She was sure that she would win! Their teacher must have committed a mistake. It was really her name written there! Oh, how she wished it was.

there's a blessing in our friendship
it's a bond between we two,
for the Lord brought us together
and i thank Him now for you...

you've been there when i needed you
we've shared our dreams and plans,
and when at times i've fallin' down
you've given me a hand...

you were always such a joy
each time that we're together,
but more than that you are my friend
and in my heart forever....

unknown...

Chinese Letters

it was written so cute and neat
i was fascinated when i first saw it
that i almost sumbled to my feet
i felt my heart as it skipped a bit.

it was written in front of me
and i couldn't help but look and see
i didn't know how this came to be
but my hands want to touch it sweetly.

it was written before my eyes
and i shouldn't let it pass me by
but i know no matter how i try
in the end i should say goodbye.

it was written in a khaki flesh
the ink was fading but it stayed fresh
and i need it more than a passionate kiss
feeling its warmth would be a bliss.

it was written with a blackest black
and in an instant i forgot to talk
'coz everything he wants is what i lack
so i think i should go and turn my back...
